Facts about Plants...
Plants are a major group of life forms on Earth. They include many familiar organisms like bushes, grasses, trees, mosses, herbs, vines, ferns and green algae. There are currently estimated to be about 350,000 species of plants. These are defined as bryophytes, seed plants, ferns and fern allies.
Some 287,655 species had been identified by 2004. Of these 258,650 are flowering and 15,000 are bryophytes. Green plants (sometimes also called metaphytes), get most of their energy from sunlight in a process called photosynthesis.
Plants are distributed across the world in varying numbers. They inhabit a multitude of environments. Very few can be found beyond the tundras at the northernmost regions of the continental shelves. At the southern extremes, plants have adapted tenaciously to the prevailing weather conditions. Plants are the dominant physical and structural component of the habitats where they occur.

Thousands of plant species are grown to beautify the human environment. They can provide shade, modify temperatures, reduce wind speed, reduce noise and provide privacy and prevent the erosion of soil. People often use cut flowers, dried flowers and house plants indoors. Outdoors, they use lawn grasses, shade trees, ornamental trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous perennials and bedding plants. Living plant art forms include topiary, bonsai, ikebana and espalier.
Believe it or not Ornamental plants have sometimes changed the course of history, as in tulipomania! Plants are also the basis of a multi-billion dollar per year tourism industry. This includes travel to arboretums, botanical gardens, historic gardens, national parks, tulip festivals, rainforests, forests with colorful autumn leaves and the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Venus flytrap, sensitive plant and resurrection plant are some examples of plants sold as novelties.
