How to Properly Coil a Garden Hose

One of the most important aspects of garden hose maintenance is coiling it properly when not in use. You will find that your garden hose will last much longer and provide many years of faithful service if you simply learn the proper way to coil it.

Don't leave your hose laying around the yard! Use these simple steps to coil it into a figure either shape for best results.

1. First turn off the water supply to the hose. (This makes sense in that you do not want water inside the hose when you go to coil it.)

2. Start the coil at the end of the hose where it connects to the spigot, a few feet away from the spigot itself.

3. Bend one large loop, about 3 feet across. Follow this loop around and cross it coming back with another loop, making a figure eight shape.

4. Bring the hose back around and follow the figure eight shape, laying more hose on top of the portion that you have already coiled.

5. Repeat until the entire hose is coiled into a complete figure eight.

After coiling your garden hose, it is best to keep it stored out of the sun to prevent drying and cracking. Garden hoses are much easier to bend or coil during warm weather months.

For better storage capabilities, consider purchasing a garden hose rack, reel or garden hose reel cart. You might want to consider purchasing a flat garden hose. Flat garden hoses take up about half of the space that a traditional hose does, although the flat garden hose will not have the durability that a good 5 or 6-ply traditional garden hose will have.
